To make a woodchip bed for the king stropharia, blewit or reddening lepiota, just choose a shady place and lay 10 gallons of woodchips on the ground for every bag of spawn used.
Spread the chips out to a depth of 2 inches and mix the spawn into the chips.
Then pour another 10 gallons (for every bag of spawn) over the bed to cover it and water the bed thoroughly.
To increase yields, you can water the beds every couple of days during dry spells.
It is best to have separate beds for different species.
If you have a lot of animals, such as raccoons or opossums, that will dig around in your chip bed, it is best to put up a fence around the bed.
Usually a small fence of chicken wire, buried just a few inches underground with a height of 2 feet above the ground, works well.
In 4 months stropharia mushrooms will begin to emerge from the chips after rains.
The bed will continue producing for 2 to 3 years giving abundant fruitings.
